On Thursday, June 4th, our Upper Andersonstown Community Forum Reading Room group are on the road, from their usual meeting place at Tullymore Community Centre in west Belfast, to Easons in the centre of town. So what’s the story?

The Upper Andersonstown group have been taking part in a weekly Reading Room as part of their Big Lottery-funded UTOPIA Project, coordinated by Rose Nicholls, since January this year.

This is a great group of older people from across west Belfast. Their reader is Lisa Morrison, a new volunteer, who recently returned to live in Carrickfergus following ten years working as an English teacher in Madrid. Lisa has read everything from Frank O’Connor to Tove Jansson and Ernest Hemingway with the Tullymore group, who have a real enthusiasm for work by Irish writers.

Alison Allen, the store manager at Easons Belfast, has arranged a very special in-store event with a reading for the group by Armagh author, Anne Doughty. Anne is particularly well known for her “Hamilton” series of historical novels,  and for “A Few Late Roses” which was long-listed for The Irish Times Fiction Prize.

The Upper Andersonstown group read an extract from “A Few Late Roses” last week and are really looking forward to the reading and a facilitated discussion afterwards.

Our Project Officer for Reading Rooms Belfast, Maeve O’Lynn said: “We are all really looking forward to Anne’s reading, and can’t wait to see which poem she has selected to accompany her reading.

“Reading Rooms is a mobile project, connecting people with literature and with each other, so we always enjoy getting out on the road to a lot of different locations and it is great to share this aspect of the project with one of our groups.

“Thursday looks set to be a very special afternoon, and I’d really like to thank Anne, as well as Alison at Easons, Rose from Tullymore and our volunteer Lisa for working together to make this happen.”
